The Kalamazoo Valley Association was founded in the 1945-46 school year. The first official championships in boys track and boys tennis were held at Upjohn Field in Kalamazoo on May 17, 1946. There were no other titles awarded during that school year.

KVA charter members were Comstock, Galesburg (prior to merging with Augusta), Kellogg, Mattawan, Plainwell, and Vicksburg. Galesburg-Augusta is the only current member to have been in the league since its inception.

Former league members include Comstock, Fennville, Gull Lake (formed by the merger of Kellogg and Richland), Plainwell, Kellogg, Richland, Vicksburg, Portage Central, St. Philip, Mattawan, Paw Paw, and Bangor.

In recent years, the KVA expanded to ten member schools. Olivet and Maple Valley joined during the 2006-07 school year, and Constantine and Schoolcraft were added during the 2008-09 school year.
